International Geodiversity Day on Sunday 6th October 2024
International Geodiversity Day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2021, following a grassroots campaign by geoscience organisations around the world. Geodiversity is all around us, and includes the parts of nature that aren't alive; like minerals, fossils, soils, and landscapes. Geodiversity Day is a worldwide celebration to bring people together in promoting the many aspects of geodiversity, and its importance to society.

Eawag has been singled out for the Chemical Landmark distinction
The Swiss Academy of Sciences has honoured the water research institute in Dübendorf as a significant historic site for chemistry. Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, revolutionised chemistry under its director, Werner Stumm, through its launching of environmental chemistry. It has contributed significantly to a better understanding of complex processes in nature and to clean bodies of water in Switzerland.

Look beyond the horizon of climate and global change research and register now for the 24th Swiss Global Change Day on 10 April 2024. In addition to expert talks, we will provide you plenty of time to present your own research or organisation with a poster or at a stand and to network with colleagues. The most attractive and comprehensive posters submitted by students or postdocs will be honoured with a travel award of 1000 francs.
Neue Infoplattform zum «Schwammstadtprinzip»
Schwammstadt betrachtet Regenwasser als wertvolle Ressource und Gestaltungselement: Zuerst verdunsten, versickern und verwenden und nur im Starkregenfall kontrolliert ableiten. Das «Schwammstadtprinzip» soll zu lebenswerten und klimaangepassten Siedlungen führen. Eine neue Infoplattform des VSA präsentiert Praxisbeispiele, bewährte Werkzeuge und Veranstaltungen zum Thema.

World Groundwater Congress IAH 2024
Der «World Groundwater Congress» ist die wichtigste internationale Veranstaltung zu Grundwasser unter der Schirmherrschaft der «International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH)». Zum ersten Mal seit 30 Jahren findet der Kongress wieder in der Schweiz von 8. bis 13. September 2024 statt, organisiert von der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft für Hydrogeologie (SGH) und dem Zentrum für Hydrogeologie und Geothermie (CHYN) der Universität Neuenburg mit Unterstützung der Plattform Geowissenschaften der SCNAT. Während der einwöchigen Veranstaltung im Kongresszentrum DAVOS werden 600-900 Teilnehmer aus Wissenschaft, Verwaltung und Wirtschaft die neuesten Erkenntnisse zum Thema Grundwasser austauschen, innovative Methoden vorstellen und drängende Herausforderungen diskutieren.

Piene eccezionali nei mesi di novembre e dicembre 2023
Nei mesi di novembre e dicembre 2023, la Svizzera romanda e settentrionale sono state interessate da eventi di piena per ben due volte nel giro di poche settimane. Le nevicate, seguite da piogge intense e dallo scioglimento della neve, hanno causato un forte aumento delle portate e dei livelli idrometrici in molte località. Il fenomeno ha assunto proporzioni mai riscontrate nei mesi invernali o perlomeno solo in rari casi. L’analisi retrospettiva che segue descrive quanto successo nei due mesi e cosa li rende degli eventi eccezionali.
